Volumetric Weight Calculation
- The cost of shipping a parcel depends not only on its weight, but also on the dimensions of the box.
- If a parcel is light but has significant dimensions, the shipping cost is charged by the so-called “volumetric weight”.
- The “volumetric weight” is determined by multiplying the three dimensions of the box — height, length and width, in inches — and dividing by 139, as shown in the illustration.
- Example 1. A box measures 18×20×24 inches and weighs 19 pounds. 18×20×24/139 = 62 Lbs. The volumetric weight is 62 pounds, so the shipping cost of the parcel is charged by the volumetric weight — 62 pounds.
- Example 2. A box measures 16×19×20 inches and weighs 44 pounds. In this case the volumetric weight does not exceed the physical weight, so the charge is based on the physical weight.
